The Pennsylvania Packet and General Advertiser was founded by John Dunlap in 1771. By 1784 it was considered the first successful daily newspaper published in the United States. ​

Treatment Overview

• The newspaper was surface cleaned with cosmetic sponges and a soft hake brush. 

• Approximately 103 cm. of pressure sensitive tape was removed from the newspaper using a heated microspatula. The adhesive residue was removed.

• Adhesive staining was reduced with ethyl acetate, and then immersed in a bath of deionized water. 

• Tears running along the center fold of the newspaper were mended using Golden acrylic toned Hanji 1301 and a 3:1 mixture of wheat starch paste and methylcellulose. Minor tears were repaired with 5 gsm Tengujo and a 3:1 mixture of wheat starch paste and methylcellulose, allowing text to remain legible
