The Handwriting & Culture of Early Modern English Manuscripts was a week-long Rare Book School course held at The Shannon Library at the University of Virginia. The course was taught by Heather Wolfe, Curator of Manuscripts at the Folger Shakespeare Library.

The curriculum provided a thorough introduction to early English handwriting, specifically the secretary hand, focussing on the alphabet, abbreviations, numbers, and dates. We also learned about common paleography terms and transcription. Highlights include making iron gall ink, carving a quill, practicing secretary hand, and letterlocking.

Funds were generously provided by the Rare Book School Bibliographical Society of the University of Virginia Scholarship and the Winterthur/ University of Delaware Dr. Edward F. and Elizabeth Goodman Rosenberg Award.
