Elizabeth Coates Paschall was a widowed Philadelphia Quaker known in her community as a skilled healer. Operating in the mid – eighteenth century, Paschall documented remedies, interactions with patients, and advice from peers in her medical recipe manuscript. Paschall exchanged remedies and information with midwives, male physicians and surgeons, female and male apothecaries, and Indigenous and African American practitioners.

Major treatment concerns: 

• The front and back boards are detached because the raised cord supports have snapped at the hinge.  

• The spine leather is friable and partially missing. A large strip has lifted towards the tail edge of the back board. 

• The first and last gatherings of the textblock have detached, and some of the bifolios have split resulting in loose leaves. Tears are present throughout the textblock.

The purpose of this treatment is to repair damage caused by use and handling. Treatment also seeks to stabilize the manuscript in preparation for digitization.
