Plate CLXXXIV Mangrove Hummingbird, Before Treatment, Recto

Plate CLXXXIV depicts five Mangrove hummingbirds, Trochilus mango, at different stages of development. The birds are composed in various states of flight around a flowering Tecoma grandiflora, the Chinese trumpet vine. The exterior of the flower petals range from yellow to pale orange, while the interior of the flowers are red. The hummingbirds are vibrantly colored with red tail feathers, pale gray wings, and jewel-like green and yellow backs. A thin glaze was applied over the green and yellow plumage of each bird, and a few strokes of glaze are visible in the flower petals.

Treatment Overview

  • The front and back of the print was surface cleaned with a hake brush and latex-free polyurethane sponges.

  • Before consolidation, the print was viewed under raking light to determine which areas were glazed, to avoid disturbing original material. Hazy areas were consolidated with brush applied 1:1:1 A15C MC (1% DI): EtOH: IPA.

  • Tears were mended with Hanji 1301 and a 3:1 wheat starch paste and methyl cellulose mixture.
